The chapter analyses the phase of definition of Italian policy making on migration between the mid 80's and the mid 90's. It aims to shed light on the interplay between national and international variables responsible for the definition of key choices made by the Italian political class in the field of migration regulation. The study makes use of a historical perspective, that is suitable to underscore this relationship at the Mediterranean and European level.

The contribution looks at the Italian policies towards Africa in order to attest if and how migration issues influenced the political agenda and the decision-making process both of the government and the parliament, respectively, between 2008 and 2018. This period witnessed the development of an alleged new course for Italian policies vis-à-vis Africa and some African countries in particular. Here we focus on Nigeria and Senegal. An outline of the official visits made by Italian politicians to Africa and the scrutiny of parliamentary debates on African issues allows to assess the divide between the rhetoric of a supposed 'new course', with Italy at the forefront of a new Euro-Africa partnership, and the continuity of 'old' concerns on matters such as the control of flows and mobility.

This essay analyzes the ways in which rural lordship was legitimized, maintained and sometimes contested in the late Middle Ages. The focus is not on the local societies and the political competition within the regional state, but rather on the position of seigneurial power in the interstices of international relations. Specifically, the dynamics of the frontier allowed the lords to enforce their power, but produced situations that put their authority in risk, providing opportunities for their subjects to contrast it. Political brokerage is the key to exploring the competition and the relationship between a variety of local actors and the state authorities. The source I selected is the Carteggio sforzesco, consisting of the written correspondence between these protagonists. From this viewpoint and thanks to records rich in narrative and descriptive contents, I will try to reconstruct economic tensions, military instability, the need for diplomatic agreements and for individual protection, that define the relationship between the Duchy of Milan, Valais, Switzerland and Grisons. Finally I will go into depth in the case-study of Val Formazza, where the domination of the lords family was in decline during the 15th Century, while local protagonists of this diversified local world - highlanders of lower social conditions settled in a peripheral valley forming an ethno-cultural minority of German speakers - were capable.

Si tratta di una comunità umana fatta di intersezioni, rotte incrociate, continue e reciproche influenze, che si muove sullo scenario politico, socio-economico e culturale, attraverso i secoli, e per la quale l'operazione di selezione, classificazione e ordine, che è insita in ogni studio critico, deve necessariamente ricalibrarsi. In una prospettiva di ricerca intercontinentale e plurilingue, il volume Rutas Atlanticas. Redes narrativas entre América Latina y Europa si propone di raccogliere studi dedicati all'indagine delle relazioni d'influenza tra l'America Latina e l'Europa, nelle dimensioni della letteratura, delle culture e della storia. I quarantatré saggi raccolti nel volume, accompagnati da cinque interviste e da tre schede libro, esplorano un esteso bagaglio di rappresentazioni letterarie, filmiche, pittoriche, teatrali, architettoniche e musicali, di traiettorie storiche, biografiche e culturali, il cui risultato delinea un eterogeneo prisma di voci, pensieri e scritture tra i due mondi.
